Membership fee vs 501c3 application

Presenter:

Vicki Carlson

Discussion:

Options of both were discussed

As we begin this coalition we are unfunded.

Mary Rose Tully discussed the new position Miriam Lubbock will be filling at UNC and the potential for support from that program.

It was discussed that we could use the Nursing Mothers of Raleigh to support any funding until we can file for 501c3 at a later date.  This is a very expensive process to start with.

It was in general agreement that we would not pursue dues at this time.

Conclusions:

To research and explore our options for not for profit status and bring back to the table.

Other Information

Group Activity during Lunch Break:

We broke into 2 groups and discussed what each of us would see as possible projects to accomplish our goals and support our mission statement and gathered back as a group after lunch to outline.

Promoting: Support a web site, develop a curriculum for schools, develop a speakers bureau, review the NC blueprint and maybe adopt as our project in getting it out to providers, establish further communication with other groups in the state that deliver care/education to moms and babies and encourage them to join the coalition,.

Protecting :Develop a media liaison to monitor what’s happening in the state related to breastfeeding, produce press releases from the coalition when issues present, become a media outlet.

Supporting: Develop a state resource guide, address the issue of Baby Friendly in NC,

Our next meeting in Feb: Report back from the USBC conference and start to develop a strategic plan for 2006-2007.
