NCLCA Breastfeeding Summit, May 21-22, NCLCA Breastfeeding Summit, May 21-22, 2017

The mission of this summit is to support, connect, and grow the community of lactation professionals in NC. Each year the NCLCA Summit brings together lactation consultants from across the state as speakers and participants. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for NC lactation consultants to collaborate, share ideas, mentor each other, and become a cohesive community of health care providers and breastfeeding advocates.

This year, the Summit will be focusing even more on the exciting lactation support talent we have in North Carolina! To foster an exchange of lactation support practice ideas, techniques, technology, and innovations, we will be offering both a LACTATION SCIENCE FAIR and a CLINICAL PRACTICE PEARLS small group guided conversations.

The lactation science fair will be a series of stations where participants can demonstrate their favorite technique, technology, or innovation. The clinical practice pearls or “clusters” will be guided conversations that begin with a short summary of the topic at hand, possibly including a case presentation. The conversations will be mediated, and participants will have an opportunity to participate in several topics over the course of the afternoon.

We will be accepting ideas for the Lactation Science Fair until April 1, 2017. See the Call for Ideas for instructions on how to submit a proposal. Acceptance is on a rolling basis and there is a 50% discount on the cost of the Summit for Science Fair presenters, so don’t delay!

We will start the 2017 NCLCA Breastfeeding Summit with a Dessert Reception and workshop on May 21, from 6:30-9:00 pm. The presentation will be “Food Sensitivities in the Breastfed Baby: Optimizing Infant Outcome through Maternal Diet”                  by our very own Lindsey Reeves MS RD LDN IBCLC CD, Angel Food Lactation and Nutrition, LLC

You can register to attend the conference here.

Previous Summits:  2016, 2015

As the state affiliate of the United States Lactation Consultant Association our mission is to sustain and advance International Board Certified Lactation Consultants of North Carolina through advocacy, networking, leadership, research, and professional development.

The IBCLC is a valued and recognized member of the health care team.

We welcome others to bring their interests and project ideas to our meetings. Our current activities include:

     Professional networking:

As NCLCA meetings move across the state with NCBC, we will provide an opportunity for each region to share their activities and build collaborations. Members are kept up to date through the NCBC community about statewide educational opportunities and  projects.

     Advocacy for IBCLCs:

Since 2013, NCLCA has worked with NCBC and the NC Child Fatality Task Force (CFTF) Perinatal Health Committee to support the work of lactation consultants through working on licensure and reimbursement for medical lactation counseling. CFTF supports reimbursement of IBCLCs by insurers and actively advocated for medical lactation services under Medicaid in 2014. In addition they are tracking and monitoring need for licensure of IBCLCs in the state.

     Discussion of current breastfeeding issues:

NCLCA members work closely with NCBC on a number of projects addressing current breastfeeding issues.  In our meetings, we have the opportunity to discuss the interface between our profession and breastfeeding. Opportunities exist through the United States Breastfeeding Committee to participate in national webinars and regional phone calls.

     Continuing education

Every year, beginning in 2015, NCLCA will host a summit providing continuing education. Your membership fee goes toward one webinar each year, provided by the United States Lactation Consultant Association (USLCA).

Mentoring of first time IBCLC exam candidates including financial support

NCLCA and NCBC provide IBLCE exam funding through the IBCLC exam scholarship. Additionally, student IBCLCs can access expertise through professional networking.

We are always open to new ideas or interest in NCLCA. Email your NCLCA Chairs anytime![/av_textblock] [av_three_fourth first][/av_three_fourth]
